Just over a year ago, Atari acquired the rights to the Intellivision brand and most of its games. Following merchandise and a collection of M-Network games, there is now an Intellivision-based console.
Intellivision Sprint is not part of the ‘+’ series and, unlike the 2600+ and 7800+, has built-in games: 45 in total, including classics such as Astrosmash and Shark Shark! The secret star of the game selection is Boulder Dash, newly ported to the console by Elektronite in 2013 – it is also the only third-party licensed title on the Sprint. Overlays for all games are included.
There is no cartridge slot; additional games are to be added via USB. The console also lacks the classic connections: it connects to the TV via HDMI, otherwise the console is equipped with USB ports. Classic controllers require an adapter. The two wireless controllers are simply plugged into the console for charging.
The original console was released by Mattel in 1979 and was a serious competitor to Atari’s 2600. Mattel sought direct comparison with Atari, particularly in sports games. To this day, the Intellivision has many fans and a lively homebrew community.
Price for Intellivision Sprint: 140 US dollars. In Europe, the device will be launched by Plaion on 23 December for 119 euros.
